Print-making

Style: Collagraph

I decided as my first project that I should do a theme of heaven and hell. The image itself has two sides, to the right is hell and all of the warfare that humanity has caused, and to the left is heaven and all of the peace and tranquility that has been restored. The image was done by carving into a linoleum block in the areas that I wanted to remain black. After that was finished, using a roller I applied the ink to the 2 varying sides of the block using red and blue as my symbols. Finally I used a rolling press to get the image on a black piece of construction paper. I call it "War".

Intaglio Etching

This is an artwork that I produced by using an intaglio style; the first thing that I decided was to go based on a mythological image. I started by taping the original image to the back of a small 4x6 tile of glass and I began to scratch out the area that was darkest for the shading. I then preceded to take the overall area of the glass and cover it in a solid layer of black ink, only to the wipe away the area's, such as between his arm and the weapon on his back, that I wanted to remain white. After I checked to see if it would appear as I had wanted,(I used a sheet of white paper and looked at the image with the paper behind it),  I printed the image using a press and allowed for the etching paper to dry. At that point I wanted a few color highlights, particularly in the mask. The title of the image is "Unmasking".

WaterColor Monoprint

This image I decided to do based on heaven and hell which still would fit the mythological theme. The process started by taking an image and just painting what I saw behind the glass, onto the glass to the best of my ability. Pointillism helped me greatly in the process because if you tried to spread the paint like you would on a canvas it would always contract back into a small blob off to the area prior. The image after it was ran through the press came to be what you see here. I call this "Glimpse".

Style: Monoprint Drawing

The 3 images above are from a unit where I had to take a piece of paper, lay it down on an already inked glass tile, and draw an image that I wanted. The process itself is not that hard as it is laying down the ink. The ink layer needed to be just right to get the type of image on the left as opposed to the image of the dragons on the far right. The results are above and all 3 of them are part of the same art title - "Struggle"

They show 2 sides to all things, good and evil. The demon and the angel as well as the 2 dragons in a locked glare.

Reduction Block Printing

How is it that you can see both beauty and terror in the same picture? I think it's because of your state of mind but that is my train of thought when I was creating this work. The process itself was a mixture of the first carving process and the inking. THe first thing I had to do was to carver away any area I wanted to remain white. To follow up, I layed down the layer of red about 17-20 times so that I could get at least one good print. Then I carved away everything except what you see in orange and blue. I repeated the inking process but with different colors. Then the last step was to take the eye and the 'flame' and carver away everything else. In the end the work came out and I titled it, "Perception"

Continuation into AP Art/ Art 4

This was my first project that I did on september 8th, 2017. The concept overall lies in the concept of a man who feels as though he lives in the 1920's but actually lives in modern day. I feel that this is very representative of who I am because I myself love the 20's and in turn this became an image of myself (with the exception of the cigarette).

The process started with the original profile view of the man and that lead to multiple viewpoints. From there I began to sketch out the buildings and the cars. I then proceeded to build upon that viewpoint by taking modern day main street and comparing it to the roaring 20's mainstreet. As you can see, the difference is in itself apparent. In the end I titled the piece, "Displacement".

I decided that I wanted to do something that was different, something unique. I decided that I would try to use spray paint in a different way then usual. I initially began with making a stencil of "Bob" and then I painted around his figure leaving him with a black silhouette. Bob is undergoing an internal renaissance about his character. This is shown by the planets going out from the light and with their closeness showing that this is a new experience and it is rapidly growing throughout his entire being.

This piece is "Internal Renaissance"

I then proceeded to advance in my technique of stenciling with this piece. I decided that I would want to try to balance the scales of fire and ice. The way that I thought to do that was with the typical Yin and Yang approach. In the end I ended up manipulating the spray paint into making a loose or firm edge as to show the personality of the element.

This piece doesn't really have a title because it was my demonstration to the class and it took approximately 5-7 min at the most. it involved the use of paper towels, Saran wrap, and 3 bowls that I used to cover the planets as to prevent any form of paint bleed.

This piece was a work into how I did mountains and the process of developing the 3 dimensional appearance to them. I also threw in an additional water style. By this I mean that I went into the waterfalls and I used a scraping knife to add the rough fall towards the bottom.

I had some fun with this piece because I decided that no matter what happened with the mountains or the water falls that I was going to make this piece unique. I decided that I would add the illusion of a past landfall that had led to the creation of the mountains.

I decided that I would try to perfect my work in mountain ranges. While I don't believe that I have completely mastered the trade I do believe that I have done exceptional work in this piece. I used a piece of newspaper that I folded over into a loose form of a scraper. However, instead of scraping I used the edge to give the mountains their edge and texture.

I was having trouble in deciding what to have my pieces revolve around at this point in time. Then I was given a suggestion by some other AP art teachers that a good concentration could be exploration. I liked this idea and I decided to take off with the idea of a new world. I wanted to show how I could incorporate acrylic in with spray paint. In doing so I added The Aquaholic  and that allowed for the beginning of the exploration concentration.

I decided to take a break from the concentration and go back to work on my planet texturing skills. The work was more focused on honing light values and how to add certain atmospheric textures.

I returned to the original theme of exploration and I decided that the time had come for advanced civilization to be found in a new surrounding. This is partially out of place because This should have been the last work for me to do but instead I felt that it needed to be done now instead of later.

The Aquaholic now has found civilized life and It is guided by the lighthouse. It has been taken in by the locals and it now seeks to guide others in its path. This is a stepping stone as to what they find next.

The crew of the Aquaholic has now found land and there is obviously intelligent design seeing as how there is a road that has a path linked to the mountains of old. There is question as to how there seems to be an absence of life in the area and this is what leads to the city that lies on the other side of the mountain range.

At the base in between the mountain range the crew looked up to see the Aurora Borealis  shining bright, yet very differently; almost fading. They are unsure why but there is no doubt that the beauty that they are beholding is one of many in the land of the lost.
